Materials Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) Rubber

Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM)

Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) represents the highest-performance class of fluoroelastomers, offering near-universal chemical resistance and unmatched thermal stability. Chemically, FFKMs are fully fluorinated carbon-fluorine backbone polymers, similar in composition to PTFE, but with crosslinkable sites that impart elastomeric flexibility. This unique structure provides extreme resistance to virtually all chemicals, solvents, and oxidizers, while maintaining elastic sealing properties up to 600 °F (315 °C).

At Eutsler Technical Products, our FFKM compounds are formulated for mission-critical sealing in chemical processing, aerospace, semiconductor, and oilfield environments where no other elastomer can survive. Eutsler’s engineered FFKM solutions deliver long-term compression set retention, exceptional cleanliness, and chemical inertness, ensuring reliable performance under the harshest process conditions.

Performance Advantages

  • Unmatched chemical resistance to nearly all chemicals, acids, amines, aldehydes, esters, ketones, and solvents — approaching PTFE inertness.
  • Extreme temperature stability with continuous sealing to 600 °F (315 °C) and intermittent exposure above 620 °F (325 °C).
  • Outstanding compression-set resistance retaining preload under prolonged heat and chemical exposure.
  • Low gas permeability for excellent vacuum and high-pressure sealing integrity.
  • Exceptional plasma and oxidative resistance ideal for semiconductor, aerospace, and chemical-reactor applications.
  • Excellent resistance to aggressive fluids and rapid gas decompression under demanding pressure and reactive-gas environments.
  • Non-flammable and non-reactive fully fluorinated backbone provides intrinsic flame resistance.

Applications

Eutsler’s custom FFKM compounds are used in the most demanding chemical and thermal sealing environments, where standard fluoroelastomers (FKM, AFLAS, FVMQ) are insufficient.

Typical applications include:

  • Chemical-process gaskets and reactor seals
  • Semiconductor wafer processing and plasma chamber seals
  • Aerospace engine and fuel system O-rings
  • Oil & gas packer elements and valve stem seals
  • Pharmaceutical and bioprocessing equipment seals
  • Analytical instrumentation and high-vacuum components
  • High-temperature compression and static seals in aggressive media

FFKM elastomers are the pinnacle of sealing performance, providing maximum reliability in corrosive, oxidizing, or high-temperature conditions.

Superior Material Performance

Eutsler’s FFKM compounds exhibit:

  • Tensile strength: 1,500 – 2,000 psi
  • Elongation: 150 – 250 %
  • Compression set: Excellent (< 20 % after 70 h @ 300 °C typical)
  • Continuous temperature resistance: up to 600 °F (315 °C)
  • Chemical compatibility: Near-universal — resistant to > 1,800 chemicals
  • Low outgassing and extractables: ideal for cleanroom environments
  • Exceptional vacuum retention and gas impermeability
  • Superior dimensional stability and aging resistance under oxidative stress

Note: While FFKM offers unparalleled chemical and thermal resistance, it has lower tear and abrasion strength compared to other fluoroelastomers and higher material cost.

For cost-sensitive applications at lower temperature, FKM or AFLAS® (TFEP) may be suitable alternatives.
